Here is my recent entry for a little poetry contest. I won second place.
The Consummation
It was the colors of the rainbow
that attracted us at first…
So bright and airy and light.
They blended and merged,
And we could not tell
Where one ended
And another began.
But it was a trick of distance;
As we drew nearer,
We saw the cracks and fissures
Between the colors –
Black spaces unseen before –
And they lured us
More than the colors.
So we dove together
into the dark unknown,
Sliding slow, then fast,
Tumbling with each other,
Fearful, yet excited,
Moaning in unplumbed depths,
Shrieking in dizzy speed.
And the darkness
Squelched even the memory
of rainbows and colors,
As we basked in creamy lava
Spiked with tantalizing ice.
Our bodies were scorched.
Our souls, frozen.
But then the light appeared
And drew us backward
Slowly, inexorably.
We turned and squinted
and saw the shadow of life.
It thawed our souls
and soothed our burns.
It was then we learned
both what we were
and what we ought to be,
and we ascended,
boldly, never looking back.
We merged with the light,
The light that makes rainbows.
